Viola Davis to Return as Amanda Waller in James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

Exciting news! Thank you to The Wrap for sharing!

Oscar, Tony, and Emmy winner Viola Davis will return as Amanda Waller in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” an individual with knowledge of the project exclusively told TheWrap.

The sequel to 2016’s “Suicide Squad” will hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021. Peter Safran and Charles Roven are producing.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” director Gunn was brought on board to helm the project. He also wrote the script and will have a completely new take on the property, in which DC supervillains are recruited by the government to carry out secret missions too dirty for the likes of Superman and Batman.

“Suicide Squad” was directed and written by David Ayer and starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jared Leto, Ezra Miller, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Cara Delevingne and Joel Kinnaman.

It grossed $325 million domestically and almost $750 million worldwide, although it was mostly panned by critics.

Davis previously told Nerd Report that she is”fascinated by the character,” who serves the DC Universe in a similar capacity as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Waller is described as “a former congressional aide and government agent who is often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former super villains working in return for amnesty.”

Davis currently headlines the ABC hit “How to Get Away With Murder” and starred in “The Help,” “Fences,” and 2018’s “Widows.”

Davis is repped by CAA, Lasher Group and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman Inc.

‘Suicide Squad 2’ To Start Filming Soon

For all you Suicide Squad fans … shares that the sequel is about to start filming and it looks like Viola will be involved.

Production for the sequel to the Academy Award-winning Suicide Squad will reportedly pick up soon, with the gang of villains getting back together sooner than anticipated.

Filming begins on Suicide Squad 2 in the middle of March 2018, according to a new listing from My Entertainment World. The production listing comes after rumors of a delay until later in the year, reportedly due to Will Smith’s schedule.

This is the second piece of huge news from Warner Bros.’ DC Films division today, coming after news of The Raid director Gareth Evans in talks to to direct a movie based on Deathstroke. The film, tentatively starring Joe Mangianello, is still in development.

New director Gavin O’Connor replaced David Ayer for the sequel, though Ayer is still involved with the developing Gotham City Sirens film focused on Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.

Though the returning cast members are not yet confirmed, the production listing points toward who will likely be involved in the film:

“The film is about Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc work [sic] together to help the government.”

It’s probably safe to assume that Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Will Smith (Deadshot), and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) will be involved in some capacity.

While Jared Leto seems likely to reprise his role as the Joker, keep in mind that Warner Bros. has a lot of tentative plans for the character at the moment. After reports of a new Elseworlds-style line of DC Comics-based films would kick off with a Joker origin movie, other reports surfaced of a Harley Quinn and Joker film starring Robbie and Leto surfaced.

No new reports have surfaced regarding which films are actually being made, but it shows that Warner Bros. is open to a lot of different possibilities concerning the character.

The early production date for Suicide Squad 2 might surprise some fans, but it does line up with Warner Bros. plans to fast track the movie. We’ll learn more about the film in the coming months, with film set to start rolling in five months.
